Blessings and Curses- It’s As Clear As Black and White

This is an addendum to Chapter 9 ‘How God Feels About Us’ – Shofar eBook

Please go back and read Parts I and II which emphasized the importance of obeying God and His Word.  This is actually the theme of the eBook!  I wrote that “God has very strong feelings when we disobey His Word!… God feels rejected and despised, reproached, ignored, and is provoked to anger.”  The Bible is replete with judgment from God for disobeying His Word which came as a result of the ungodly way His people lived…

If I were still writing the Shofar eBook I would add on the following:

CHAPTER 9 (con’t)

Do you want to be blessed by God?

Blessings come only by obedience to God and to His Word.  If we are disobedient, we will not be blessed, but instead we will reap His disfavor and curses.  The opposite of blessings are curses. We can read about this from Genesis to Revelation, more specifically Leviticus 26 and in Deuteronomy Chapter 28, which in my King James Version, is titled, ‘Obedience Blessed’.  I suggest a careful reading of these chapters which shows how God will honor those who take Him seriously and will bless their lives and their nation.  Having a good testimony for all to see will result in God making you:

the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only and thou shalt not be beneath, if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them

And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.”    (Deut 28:10, 13-14)

God is looking for those who are faithful to listen and obey Him uncompromisingly, and without hypocrisy.  His Word is “Yea” and “Amen”; it is clear as black and white, with no gray areas in between.  When we are obedient children, we show God how much we love Him by worshipping and honoring Him only, doing what is pleasing to Him that brings glory to His name.

Blessings for Obedience

Some of the blessings for obedience from Leviticus 26:1-13 and Deuteronomy 28:1-14 are:

God’s presence with His people; more than sufficient food to eat; dwell in safety; live in peace and no fear; no animal attacks; success and prosperity, personal blessings; blessings of productivity and fruitfulness of the people, the land and livestock; military might; rain in its season; respect and honor, etc.

‘Disobedience Cursed’

That is the heading for Deut 28:15-69 in the KJV.  The first 14 verses describe how God will honor us and bless our obedience, and the next 53 verses till the end of the chapter tell of the curses, calamities and destruction that will come to those who disregard the importance of listening to God and obeying His commandments.  God takes this disdain for His Word as an indication that He has been forsaken and rejected.

“… if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: . . until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me.  (vs 15, 20)

And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations whither the LORD shall lead thee. . . Because thou servedst  not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things (vs 37, 47)

Curses for Disobedience

What the Bible says about God’s curses are paraphrased below.  To get the full impact of the scriptures, please read them for yourself from your own Bible.  The first is that curses will come upon you like a flood and overwhelm you, wherever you are (Deut 28:15).  It would be worse than just a streak of bad luck!

Some of the curses mentioned are:  calamities and tragedies; pestilence, afflictions and incurable diseases; drought, poor and diseased harvests, infestation of insects and other pests; defeat in wars and no allies, oppression from other nations; foreigners will prosper while the citizens suffer failures; business failures; home bankruptcies, extreme duress and mental illness, sudden death by heart attacks; misfortunes; broken marriage and families; the plagues of Egypt; living in fear, etc.  If you want to pursue this subject, there are a lot more curses to read about in the books of the prophets.

This is what God wants for us:

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”  (Jer 29:11-13 NIV)

These are blessings from God in Psalm 103:2-5

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

  • Who forgiveth all thine iniquities;
  • who healeth all thy diseases;
  • Who redeemeth thy life from destruction:
  • who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
  • Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
