TODAY’S WORD, 8-2-16 THE BLESSED HOPE

psalm-62-5-my-soul-waits-on-god-he-is-my-hope1

Holding Fast to the Blessed Hope

I just returned from the memorial services for a favorite cousin.  Two days ago the newspaper published a lengthy obituary of 8 paragraphs on his life.  Besides family information, it described the highlights of his life- accomplishments as an all-star athlete, professional achievements, awards and recognition as an educator and leader in the community, state and at the national level. His exemplary character and life lessons he expoused were extolled by the author of his obit.

BUT the most important paragraph was the first one which was a testimony of who he was- a child of God who had an intimate relationship with God, his Father in Heaven:

(He was) ‘lovingly surrounded by family and friends, and filled with the Holy Spirit’. . . ‘called home to enjoy everlasting life with Jesus Christ in  heaven.  His family laid hands, and prayed the Lord’s Prayer saying a final aloha, knowing goodness and mercy shall follow him as his spirit lifted to dwell in the house of the Lord forever.’

My cousin loved the Lord with his whole heart and knew WHO he was; he knew WHERE he was going when his time on earth was over; and he knew HOW he would receive salvation and eternal life by believing in the name of Jesus.  He knew about the BLESSED HOPE and was holding on to it.

Looking for that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify unto himself a peruliare people, zealous of good works.’ (Titus 2:12-14)

Hebrews chapter 11 says this about the ‘heroes’ or patriarchs from the Old Testament:

‘These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. . .

‘But now they desire a better country, that is an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. (Heb 11:13, 16)

This is our BLESSED HOPE–  That because Jesus was resurrected from the dead so we, too, can also HOLD ON TO THE BLESSED HOPE OF OUR RESURRECTION!

‘But I would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Wherefore comfort one another with these words‘.  (1Thess 4:13-18)

#2  WHY THE WORD OF GOD IS IMPORTANT

To recap last week’s lesson–  The Bible is the blueprint of God’s plan and purpose for man.  It gives us instructions to our heavenly destination by pointing us in the right direction.  But unlike a map, compass or GPS that can also direct us to a location, the Bible most importantly, does that PLUS it provides clear guidelines to keep us on track with exhortations and warnings, as to who and what will prevent us from reaching the rewards that God has for us.

So, why is the Bible a bestseller and a very important book?  It is because many people look to the Bible to find answers in life such as why am I here, what is life all about, is God real, is there a heaven and hell, and what will happen to me when I die?  I have met people who turned to God out of desperation and despair over the condition in their lives.  Some were in prison when they were handed a Bible and they found peace with God.  In my Philippines Missions posts there are pictures and stories of individuals who found the Lord in jail or prison.  We did marketplace preaching with a once ‘bad dude’ who dealt drugs and carried a gun until he was arrested in his tracks and his life was turned around!  Many folks with bad backgrounds, as well as respectable people, have met God through the pages of the Bible, by hearing the gospel message and from the witness of Christian believers.

About Eternal Life– Eternal life can be found only by faith in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son. (John 3:16).  It is only by studying the Bible that one can receive revelation of who God is and about His provision for us to have eternal life.  Titus 1:2 tells us that before the world began God promised us the hope of eternal life and God cannot lie. (Titus 1:1-2 AMP)  The Bible has detailed instructions that are clear and repetitive, with no errors or contradictions: it tells us that we have an enemy or adversary called  the devil or Satan who will use his many strategies and devices to ‘steal, kill, and destroy us’, to rob us of eternal life and to take us to hell with him.

Jesus came to show us the way to our Heavenly Father, to teach us about how we could have life and life more abundantly.  Jesus said, ‘I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me’ (John 14:6).

Jesus came to teach us and warn us about deception, mentioned 4 times in Mt 24:4, 5, 11, 24.  In Mt 24:3 one of the questions asked Jesus was about the sign of His coming and of the end of the world.  His answer was that there would be widespread deception in the end times, and that His coming would be unexpected, and sudden, catching many by surprise.  Also in Mt 24 are the signs of the world situation and extreme disturbances in the earth occurring everywhere.  In addition the condition of the church is described as in great apostasy which it is today, at this present time.  The Bible provides us with the daily news and future events on the horizon, but we must search these out by studying the scriptures for ourselves.

Why should we study God’s Word?  One good reason is because God has commanded us to do so.  Jesus said:

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.  (Mt 4:4)

If you continue in my Word, then you are my disciples indeed.  (John 8:31)

To be a blessed person, one must love God’s Word and meditate on it day and night.  (Psalms 1:1-2)

If we want to learn about God, we will find Him revealed in the books of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.  If we want to have faith to believe in God, we must go to His Word to learn of Him since faith comes from hearing/reading His Word (Rom 10:17). By reading our Bible, we can increase our faith, overcome sin, and temptations to sin.  When we submit ourselves to the Word of God and will of God, we are able to be strong and can resist the attacks and fiery darts of Satan.  We can have answered prayers.  (1John 2:14; John 15:7)

An important reason for studying the Bible is that it will help us to know what is going on in the world and why.  We can know where we are in God’s timetable and how close we are to the return of Jesus Christ to earth.   Jesus said in John 16:33:

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

TODAY’S WORD FOR YOU, 12-14-15 A GIFT FOR YOU THIS CHRISTMAS

RECEIVE IT; IT'S YOURS!

RECEIVE IT; IT’S YOURS!

The greatest gift from God is LIFE- ETERNAL LIFE.  But it’s yours only if you will ACCEPT IT!

‘For God so loved the world, (you and me) that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him (Jesus) should not perish, but have everlasting life.’

 (John 3:16)

To accept your gift, all you need is FAITH in God and BELIEF in Jesus Christ as your Saviour.  You can pray your own words or words like the following:

‘Dear Jesus,

I am a lost sinner and I’m sorry for my sins.  Please forgive me of my sins and come into my heart.  I accept you now as my Lord and Savior and claim my gift of eternal life.  Thank you for dying on the cross for me, for saving my soul and with your help I will live for you.  AMEN.’

If you have said this simple prayer I will now have another brother or sister in Christ!  YAY!!!  And there is REJOICING in heaven over your accepting God’s gift to you!!!

‘. . .likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.’

‘. . .there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.’ (Luke 15:7, 10)

Dream of Mom in Heaven, STS eBook

I dreamt about my mom being in heaven.

A few years ago I had a vivid dream that I saw my mom in heaven.  I tried to capture the scene in a small oil painting.  She stood in a clearing in a white dress. There were trees on both sides of a path that led to a cottage at the end of it.  It was so beautiful and serene that I could only attempt to convey the mood in the picture with my limited artistic skills.

My mom knew Jesus as her Savior; she knew that God was her Father and she was His child, His daughter.  She lived a life that was pleasing to God.  And when she died she went to heaven where I will see her again one day.  When my dad passed on we had a private family graveside memorial.  Dad honored God his whole life.  Wyman told our family and friends to say their “Good bye,” or “I’ll be seeing you later”  if they accept Jesus into their hearts.  Many said a simple prayer of faith that day to assure themselves of their salvation, simply by believing Romans 10:9:

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

John 3:16 tells us:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Having a Relationship With God

To know God and receive all of the blessings that He has for us requires a knowledge of who God is and finding out what it means to be a child of God.  This is why we need to learn to apply our faith to believe and obey God’s Word, as we enter into a relationship with Him.  Our relationship with God depends upon our love and obedience in following His commandments.  We accept the authority of the Bible as Truth and allow the Holy Spirit to give us understanding and clarity.  We accept it WHOLE and not pick it apart since God said that

“Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin,  for correction of error and discipline in obedience, and for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in thought, purpose, and action).  So that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work”  (2 Tim 3:16-17 Amplified Bible).

We have to know what the requirements are to be in a relationship with God, and then we can receive the blessings and rewards of our obedience to Him.  Everything we do in obedience to God’s Word in our families, our jobs and businesses, whatever we set our hands to do, will have God’s blessings in abundance, and we will be respected (paraphrased from  Deuteronomy 28).  But on the other hand, if we don’t follow God’s ways, curses and calamities, everything that could go wrong will happen to us because we have left the protective care and promises of God

The only way to be accepted by God and for us to have a relationship with Him, is to fully believe that God is who He says He is: He says what He means and means what He says, i.e. believe that HIS WORD IS TRUE!

Numbers 23:19 says,

“God is not a man, that He should tell or act a lie, neither the son of man, that He should feel repentance or compunction (for what He has promised). Has He said and shall He not do it? Or has He spoken and shall He not make it good?” (Amplified Bible)

The reality of this is that a non-acceptance of God’s Word is a rejection of God Himself. This is the issue that confronts most folks today, even in the Church. So many folks want to accept God on their terms according to what they find agreeable with them or what meets with their approval.  God’s Way is the only way to eternal life. God sent Jesus to point out HIS WAY for us:  Jesus said (to Thomas and to us),

I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE: no man comes to the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

Since God reveals Himself and His plan and purpose for our lives in His Word  it is important to do serious Bible study, not just simply read it, but read and expect God to reveal His truth to our hearts, to make it real to our hearts and lives.  We need to STUDY to have God’s approval, to understand and interpret the scriptures correctly and not be ashamed by being ignorant of basic Bible principles; we bring reproach upon ourselves and do not bring glory to God if we present ourselves as poor testimonies of our  Christian faith (paraphrased from 2Timothy  2:15)

(NEXT- CHAPTER 2,  PLEASING GOD- LOVE GOD, LOVE HIS WORD AND OBEY HIM)

Honoring A Very Special Father

While many of us will remember our fathers this Father’s Day 2012, we need to honor another father, the Father of all fathers, our Father God in heaven.  It is God, our Father, who  loves us with an Enduring Love.  Unlike our earthly fathers, God knew us and loved us from before we were born (Jeremiah 1:5).  And when our fathers leave this earth and they can no longer care for us, our Father in heaven will continue to love and care for us.  Some children have not had good earthly fathers.  Some have had absentee fathers or fathers that they have not had a very good relationship with.  This is not the case with our Father God in heaven. It says in 1 Peter 5:7, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.  Isaiah 59:1 tells us, “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened at all, that it cannot save, nor His ear dull with deafness, that it cannot hear.” And He said, “… I will never leave you, nor forsake you”  (Hebrews 13:5).  God has plans for each of us, “plans to prosper you & not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV).

In the New Testament, Jesus taught us about our Father in heaven when He said to pray, ‘Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name’ (Mt 6:9). Jesus spoke about God many times as ‘your Father which is in heaven’ or ‘your heavenly Father’, using the personal pronoun ‘your’ meaning our Father!

In the Bible , God our Father is revealed as a loving & merciful God.

  • Psalm 46:1 states, “God is our refuge & strength, a very present help in trouble.”
  • John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal  life.”

God is our Heavenly Father- if we believe in and accept Jesus as our Saviour.  There is a popular song among the youth called ‘One Way’ which emphasizes this fact.  There is only one way to  have eternal life with God in heaven.  It is through Jesus.  Jesus said ‘I am the way, the truth, & the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me’ (John14:6).  He said “For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, & have believed that I came out from God” (John16:27).  The Bible says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”  If you believe in your heart that Jesus was sent from heaven by God to save you from your sins and to show you the way to heaven, then God is your Father, and you are His child.  He is your Father God!  So on Father’s Day and EVERY day, let us honor God our Father in heaven!
