SEARCHING FOR JOY IN 2017
ARE YOU A JOYFUL PERSON? Or is joy elusive and not a big part of your life? Where can one find JOY, if it can be found?
If JOY is equated with happiness, then what can help people experience happiness? Speaking as a middle-class American, these are my thoughts. The younger set like my grandchildren are happy to be on holiday break from their mountains of school homework; they are overjoyed to meet friends at the mall, to go to the beach or movies, and just hang out together. The older youth and young adults may be fortunate to find joy in academic success, good jobs, and to date and get married to their perfect mate. Many mature adults are content with stable jobs to be able to raise and provide well for their families, fill their refrigerators and pantries with food, pack their closets with clothes, and furnish their comfortable homes with the necessities and luxuries of life and living. Then there’s some healthy retired folks, of whom are my friends and family members who drive the latest model Infinity or SUV and go on world cruises twice a year, not counting the vacations in between. Such is a brief picture of what makes some people happy or joyful.
BUT, the reality of JOY, however, is too difficult to experience for the masses of humanity, not only in 3rd world countries, but also in America. How can these multitudes fathom happiness and peace when faced with living with the threat of unemployment and/or homelessness and house less ness like here in Hawaii where there is very little affordable housing for rent or purchase. How can one feel any JOY when faced with mounting problems of personal and family crisis of every kind; desperate needs for finances, food and shelter; major health issues, and life threatening adversities.
REAL LASTING JOY, sorry to say, is not attainable as long as we live on this earth because there will always be adversities (John 16:33), and there is nothing that is of tangible or of any permanent value. It is futile to pursue after worldly things and riches because the new things can get old, wear out, or damaged; what you want to hang on to can get lost, become unfashionable or no longer ‘trendy’; and worse, thieves can break into your home and steal your ‘precious’ possessions, or snatch your purse or wallet and then go on a spending spree with your credit cards. All of this has happened to me and maybe to some of you, too. And we are living not only in troubled/perilous times, but also on borrowed time.
This is what the Bible says about our treasures, the fragility of life, and about REAL JOY:
TREASURES– Do not gather and heap up and store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust and worm consume and destroy, and where thieves break though and steal. But gather and heap up and store for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust nor worm consume and destroy, and where thieves do not break through and steal; For where your treasure is there will your heart be also. (Mt 6:19-21 AMP)
LIFE-(Yet) you do not know [the least thing] about what may happen tomorrow. What is the nature of your life? You are [really] but a wisp of vapor (a puff of smoke, a mist) that is visible for a little while and then disappeared [into thin air]. (James 4:14 AMP)
REAL JOY– The source of REAL JOY comes from placing our faith and Trust in God and His Word. REAL JOY comes from God our Heavenly Father; REAL JOY is to know Him as our LORD and SAVIOR.
And be not grieved and depressed, for the joy of the Lord is your strength and stronghold. (Nehemiah 8:10b)
That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. (1John 1:4)
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. (Psalms 51:12)
Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. (Habakkuk 3:18)
IN 2017 I CHOOSE TO BE JOYFUL IN THE LORD. WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO?
I plan to work on my relationship with God, my family and others, and make the time spent with God and others quality time.
I want to live in God’s JOY every day, rejoice in the JOY of my salvation and with JOY look with anticipation for the SOON COMING of my Lord and Savior, JESUS CHRIST. AMEN!
