I never thought I would ever write anything with the title- 3 Things I Want My Son to Know About Porn.

But, after being caught off guard and completely surprised nearly two years ago with my first son, the reality of him growing up in an era supersaturated in sex hit me like a ton of bricks.

Hardcore pornography is as accessible as a Google search.

Sexting is as easy as exchanging cell numbers.

Virtual sex with robots is a reality just around the corner.

And that is the world in which my son will learn to be a man.

And it makes me pause.

This is the world in which my son will begin to learn whether people have value or not.

This is the world in which my son will begin to learn whether women are beautifully created beings or objects to exploit.

  1. I remember, many years ago, before internet, I read a dystopian futuristic book about a world where, for recreation, users plugged video games into their neural network, for a real virtual experience. This isn’t so far-fetched now. I read the article you reblogged and another article by the same author, and while he is correct about the dangers of porn, I am concerned about his man-centered viewpoint. I assume the author is emergent, and he sees God as our servant for our benefit and fulfillment, although I am sure he wouldn’t say so in these sort of words. His concern about porn for his son, and the world’s view of beauty and exploitative men in relation to his daughter, leaves out the biblical purpose for shunning these values. The biblical reason we follow God’s ways is because we love him and desire to serve him. While walking the narrow path may lead to blessing for us, it may just as likely lead to suffering. And if the view is that we do things God’s way for our benefit, we may be sadly disappointed.

  2. Chaya, as the author and many others concurred, this post has great value as a ‘conversation starter’ and ‘eye opener’. It has opened up the subject to dialogue, motivated some to follow up with their work with youth and has generated interest in sexual addictions and others they affect, namely women as well, and even professing Christians. If you read through the comments you will find that Brandon’s response (2-1-13 6:29 p.m. and others) is based on his conviction that “it is only through Jesus that we can truly find freedom and liberation from porn…” I stumbled across this post and have not read any others yet. Thanks for your comments. ~Liz
