Oppression of the Poor- shared on Facebook 12-27-2011

Reading my Bible today, I saw that in Malachi, one of Israel’s sins noted was ‘oppression of the poor’. I thought about attitudes expressed regarding the poor, the unemployed, and especially the increasing number of homeless individuals and families on our island and in our state. I’ve heard people say many unkind things about the helpless and hopeless homeless, none worth repeating here. Three of us in my family had a chance to serve a meal at the Next Step shelter and saw young children there with their parents who live in cubicles! More folks will end up out in the streets if there’s no turn around in our state and national economy, and if Pres. Obama’s trips back home cost millions of dollars per trip, etc.

So many people had a great Christmas and filled the malls yesterday for after Christmas sales while folks line the sidewalks with their tents on the streets near the old stadium, by the old pineapple cannery, in other out of the way places, and often right in our face in parks, and places we frequent.

Anyway, I had a major big upset a couple of weeks back when the paper had a big to-do about the $12 million new home at the zoo for 2 elephants. I waited and waited, but nothing came up in letters to the editor to this day! Hey, aren’t people even more important than this new elephant home? All that wonderful space for 2 elephants and no space anywhere for our down and outers. Like Jesus, when He was born- no space in the inn. . . What a sad state of affairs this is; what a sad State we live in! May God have mercy on the poor!
